NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service

How it works

Complete the detailed pre-screening online, then a registered pharmacist confirms the clinical decision with you before any supply.

1

Tell us what you need

Choose whether you want to start, continue, or discuss a problem with an oral contraceptive.

2

Complete the pre-screening

The clinical assistant collects your identity, medicines, health history, measurements and preferences. It asks follow-up questions where an answer needs clarification.

3

A pharmacy reviews it

Your consultation is securely assigned to a participating pharmacy. The pharmacist checks the answers, verifies key details and discusses the clinical decision with you.

4

The pharmacist decides

The decision tool supports the review, but the pharmacist makes the final decision under the NHS service and relevant PGD. Supply is never guaranteed.

5

Supply and follow-up

If approved, the medication is prepared and dispatched. If supply is not appropriate, the pharmacist explains the next step or referral.

For urgent symptoms or emergency contraception, do not wait for an online consultation. Contact a community pharmacy, sexual health service, NHS 111, or emergency services as appropriate.
